Keep your feet in mind
Even the gentlest horse can place his hoof so hapless, that your foot might be underneath. So: never use shoes with little protection or even sandals around your horse. Pay attention also when a well-meaning visitor is around the horse - make sure he wears appropriate foot wear!
If you ride with stirrups, boots with heels are a must to avoid slipping through and getting stuck.
