Did you know?
Form of hooves
The front limbs carry the weight of the heavy rib cage, the neck and the head of the horse. This job is best achieved through the round form of the front hooves. The hind hooves however are mainly responsible for the forward impulsion and speed – which is most effectively done by their oval form. Preferably the form of a hoof is neither too pointed nor too blunt, but ideally evenly shaped, although the majority of horses deviate slightly from the ideal form. A good hoof practitioner or farrier should always advice you with the horse’s wellbeing in mind. By the way: while buck hooves aren’t welcome among horses, they are typical for donkeys!
